Al Mujib pumped hydroelectric energy storage project
Al Mujib pumped hydroelectric energy storage project is a PPP initiative that aims to implement a closed-loop pumped hydroelectric energy storage (PHES) plant with an installed capacity of 450 MW and 7 full-load hours.
The PHES technology operates by pumping water from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir when low-cost surplus electricity is available, and then releasing it back to the lower reservoir through a turbine when the marginal cost of electricity generation is high.

Geographic Location
The project site is located in Wadi Al Mujib area, in the vicinity of the dam.
The project area extends from just the northern border of the reservoir up to the northern plateau of the surrounding highlands which have an elevation of between approximately 170 masl and 770 masl.
Project’s Scope
The project uses a DBFOMT structure, including:
The upper reservoir that has a storage volume of 2.7 mcm.
The Headrace Waterway (Penstocks) consists of two parallel steel penstocks with an inner diameter of 3.1 m each.
The shaft powerhouse consists of an underground shaft and an above-ground mahine hall.
The lower reservoir for the closed loop system, with an activated storage volume of approx. 2.6 mcm, m.
